Three pieces of Ron Trent history return to vinyl as Nite Grooves continues digging into its archives for the second volume of its Ron Trent collection.
Few producers have explored the deeper, more musical reaches of house quite like Ron Trent, and Nite Grooves‘ latest archival 12″ brings together three cuts that demonstrate different sides of the Chicago producer’s sound.
Opening the collection is Carlton’s “Can’t Be Without”, presented in the Damier & Trent Prescription Extended Mix from 1996.
Created alongside Chez Damier during their celebrated Prescription era, it’s everything you’d hope to hear from the pairing. Deep, expansive and beautifully atmospheric, warm chords and soulful elements drift across an insistent groove while the production gradually unfolds rather than chasing an obvious payoff. Nearly three decades later, it still possesses that timeless quality that made the Prescription sound so influential.
Things remain suitably deep with DJ Roland Clark presents Urban Soul’s “My Urban Soul (USG Club Mix)”.
Here Trent works alongside Anthony Nicholson as Urban Sound Gallery, building a rich, bass-heavy backdrop around Roland Clark’s spoken-word vocal. There’s a sensuality running throughout, but underneath it sits a serious groove, the sort of hypnotic house record that needs very little decoration once it’s locked into its stride.
Closing proceedings is Ron Trent presents The Kings Dub with “Welcome Sire (Rockers Extended)”.
This is perhaps the most stripped and dub-minded moment of the collection. Deep house foundations meet echoes of dub and soundsystem culture, creating something spacious, rolling and hypnotic that feels designed for the later reaches of a long DJ set.
There are no attempts to reinvent these records for 2026, and that’s precisely the attraction.
“The Ron Trent Collection Vol. 2″ simply puts three superb examples of Trent’s catalogue back where they belong: on a 12” and in the hands of DJs.
For anyone discovering his music retrospectively, it’s also a concise reminder of just how much depth exists within the Ron Trent catalogue.
