A legendary lost Frankie Knuckles mix finally emerges, transforming a house classic into a breathtaking showcase for Ann Nesby’s timeless vocal.

Some records carry stories. Others carry myths. Frankie Knuckles’ long-rumoured ‘Lullaby Mix’ of The Pressure Pt. IIbelongs firmly in the latter category.

Originally appearing on Sounds Of Blackness’ landmark 1991 album The Evolution Of Gospel, The Pressure already occupied sacred ground within house music. Written during a period when gospel, soul and house music were colliding in powerful new ways, the record showcased the extraordinary voice of Ann Nesby and helped establish Sounds Of Blackness as one of the most important musical collectives of their era. Frankie Knuckles’ original remix would soon become a staple for discerning house DJs, finding a home everywhere from Sound Factory to sets by David Morales and Danny Tenaglia.

Yet among true house heads, whispers persisted for decades about another version. A special mix played by Frankie himself, rarely heard outside select dancefloors and never officially released. A version that stripped away much of the original arrangement and allowed the song’s emotional core to shine brighter than ever before.

Now, remarkably, that version finally sees the light of day.

The ‘Lullaby Mix’ is unlike most house records. In fact, it barely behaves like one at all. Satoshi Tomiie’s percussion programming is largely absent, replaced by floating synth textures, subtle bass movements, delicate keyboard stabs and Terry Burrus’ beautiful piano work. Rather than driving the record forward, Frankie allows it to breathe, suspending it in a dreamlike atmosphere that feels almost spiritual.

At the centre of everything stands Ann Nesby.

Her vocal performance has always been extraordinary, but here it becomes utterly transcendent. Previously unheard verses restore the song’s full emotional arc, allowing every phrase, every inflection and every moment of vulnerability to resonate with even greater impact. Stripped of distractions, the listener is drawn directly into the heart of the performance.

What emerges is less a remix and more a revelation.

There is a temptation when discussing Frankie Knuckles to fall back on familiar phrases about house music’s founding fathers and legendary status. Yet releases like this remind us why those accolades exist in the first place. Frankie understood that house music was never simply about rhythm or functionality. At its very best, it was capable of carrying joy, sorrow, hope, spirituality and human connection all at once.

The ‘Lullaby Mix’ embodies that philosophy perfectly.

For longtime fans, this is a genuine holy grail finally arriving after more than three decades of speculation. For younger listeners discovering it for the first time, it serves as a powerful reminder that house music’s greatest moments often came not from the biggest drops, but from the deepest emotions.

A remarkable release and an essential piece of house music history.
