Black Country deep house craftsman Mark E returns to his long-running E Versions series with a refined, groove-led double take on one of his most enduring productions.
After an eight year pause, Mark E reopens the E Versions archive with volume nine, a release that quietly underlines why his work continues to age so gracefully. Across two contrasting but complementary cuts, he revisits Call Me, originally released back in 2011, offering both a respectful nod to the past and a fresh perspective rooted in feel rather than nostalgia.
Side A hands the reins to Dixon, whose edit of Call Me remains a masterclass in restraint. Built around a simple but deeply locked groove, the track slowly unfurls through undulating analogue bass, hazy chords and subtle melodic movements that gently pull you further into its orbit. It is midtempo deep house at its most hypnotic, designed for long blends and patient dancefloors, and it is no surprise to see it finding renewed support from selectors like Luke Una. The beauty here lies in how little needs changing, with the edit amplifying the original’s understated magic rather than overworking it.
On the flip, Mark E delivers a brand new rework titled I’ll Call You Back, and this is where things loosen up. The groove feels more jammed and organic, driven by a raw drum machine pulse and flecked with jazzy, spacey synth lines that drift in and out of focus. It has a warmer, more playful feel than the A side, leaning into Mark E’s love of live-sounding arrangements and subtle improvisation while still keeping one eye firmly on the dancefloor.
E Versions 9 is not about big moments or peak time dramatics. Instead, it is a reminder of the power of patience, groove and musical instinct. Mark E proves once again that revisiting old ideas can feel vital when handled with care, making this a quietly essential deep house 12 for collectors, selectors and late night dancers alike.
