Chicago disco specialist Rahaan breathes new life into Loleatta Holloway’s “Catch Me On A Rebound” with a bass-driven, percussion-heavy rework.

There are few DJs who know their way around a disco record quite like Chicago’s Rahaan. A selector, collector and producer with an extraordinary ear for forgotten grooves, he’s spent years keeping the spirit of underground disco alive, both behind the decks and through his own edits and reworks.

His latest outing on Typewriter Record Pool, MothaFunka Connection, brings together three remixes on one 12-inch, but it’s “Rebound” that’s been getting our attention here at KOTT.

Taking its inspiration from Loleatta Holloway’s magnificent “Catch Me On A Rebound”, Rahaan gets straight to the heart of what makes a great disco rework tick. A wonderfully infectious walking bassline provides the backbone, while rhythmic bongo patterns and scraping percussion give the whole thing a loose, almost live feel.

There’s a real sense of movement to the production. The percussion keeps things bubbling away, the bassline does much of the heavy lifting, and carefully placed snippets of Holloway’s unmistakable vocal bring that familiar flash of disco drama without overwhelming the groove.

And that’s where Rahaan’s understanding of the music really comes through. Rather than simply leaning on the original’s most recognisable moments, he gives the rhythm room to breathe, allowing the individual elements to work their magic.

It’s funky, playful and full of character, with that raw, percussive energy that makes this kind of record such a pleasure to hear on a proper sound system.

Rahaan has long been one of those DJs capable of making even the most knowledgeable disco enthusiasts feel they’ve barely scratched the surface of the genre. That deep-rooted appreciation for the music is evident here.

“Rebound” is a fine example of how to revisit a much-loved disco record while bringing something worthwhile to the party.
