Costa Rica’s Prisma Deer and Vishap blur the lines between house, disco and jazz on “It’s Jazz”, backed by a livelier rework from Mexican producer Hotmood.
There’s no great mystery behind the title of Prisma Deer and Vishap’s latest collaboration. “It’s Jazz” wears its influences proudly, taking familiar elements from the genre and reshaping them for the dancefloor.
Built around a warm, rolling house groove, the Original Mix brings together sampled saxophone and piano with a thick Moog bassline that gives the track plenty of weight underneath. Vibraphone adds another layer of colour, while Vishap’s spoken-word vocal gives proceedings a loose, late-night feel.
Rather than simply dropping jazz samples over a house beat, there’s a nice sense of space to the arrangement. The various elements are allowed to breathe, giving the track an organic quality while the rhythm section keeps everything firmly pointed towards the floor.
Mexican producer Hotmood takes things up a gear on the remix.
Keeping the character of the original intact, he rearranges the vibraphone and introduces additional percussion and textures, tightening the groove and injecting a little more urgency. It’s the more overtly dancefloor-focused of the two versions, without losing the jazz-infused personality that makes the original work.
A classy meeting point between jazz, house and nu-disco, “It’s Jazz” is another reminder that sometimes the clue really is in the title.
