Nightmares On Wax reconnects with his electronic roots alongside Marlon Lopez, delivering a stylish collection of dubby grooves, tech-house textures and late-night atmosphere.
Few artists have navigated electronic music’s changing landscapes quite as gracefully as George Evelyn, better known as Nightmares On Wax. While recent years have seen the Leeds-born producer become closely associated with the Balearic spirit of Ibiza and his signature downtempo sound, Patang EP finds him looking back towards the electronic foundations that first established his reputation in the early 1990s.
Teaming up with rising talent Marlon Lopez for the first in a new collaborative series on 20/20 Vision, the result is a release that feels both familiar and refreshingly unexpected.
Opening track Patang immediately sets a hypnotic tone. Built around a slow-moving, dub-influenced groove, it snakes its way through layers of melodic basslines, glitchy electronics and subtle atmospheric textures. There is plenty of space within the arrangement, allowing the production to breathe while creating a mood that feels perfectly suited to after-hours listening or deeper moments on the dancefloor. It’s understated but highly effective.
The energy lifts on Cancel Dat!, which introduces a tougher, more club-focused dynamic. Crunchy drum programming, bleep-heavy synths and a rolling low-end combine to create a groove that sits somewhere between classic tech-house and contemporary underground house music. The track carries a playful edge throughout, balancing functionality with enough character to avoid feeling formulaic.
Wulf’s Jam 4 Jamie takes the core elements of Cancel Dat! and pushes them further into deeper territory. The groove becomes more twisted and hypnotic, with additional layers and subtle shifts rewarding repeated listens. It feels less immediate than the original version but arguably offers greater depth, making it a strong option for DJs looking to build atmosphere rather than chase peak-time moments.
Closing the EP is label boss Ralph Lawson’s Get It Together Remix. Reworking the original into something looser and more soulful, Lawson introduces spoken-word elements and cleverly rearranged grooves that give the track a fresh perspective. There are echoes of artists such as I:Cube in its playful approach to rhythm and space, while still retaining the distinctive DNA of the source material.
What makes Patang EP particularly enjoyable is hearing Nightmares On Wax revisit sounds that first inspired his musical journey. While traces of his Balearic sensibility remain throughout, there is a clear focus on electronic experimentation, groove and underground club culture. Combined with Marlon Lopez’s contributions and strong remix support, the EP feels like the beginning of a promising new chapter rather than a nostalgic exercise.
For longtime Nightmares On Wax fans, this offers an intriguing glimpse into another side of his musical personality. For newer listeners, it serves as a reminder of why he remains one of electronic music’s most respected and enduring figures.
