Club U Nite reaches straight into the early ’90s house playbook for “His Master’s Vinyl EP”, bringing together Manhattan Project, Black Chunes Productions and Reign Of Rhythm.
There’s no attempt to disguise the reference points here. The EP is openly inspired by the sound of 1991, when drums swung harder, Rhodes and organ riffs did much of the heavy lifting and a groove didn’t need endless layers to work a dancefloor.
Manhattan Project takes control of the A-side with “Shufflin’ On”, a chunky shuffle driven by swinging drums, jazzy touches and that unmistakable old-school organ sound. It’s loose, warm and satisfyingly uncomplicated, leaning into the kind of rhythmic movement that gave early ’90s house so much character.
“Everybody Move” digs further into the groove. Chunky Rhodes loops sit alongside soulful samples and sturdy drums, giving the track a more immediately floor-focused feel while retaining the rawness running through the record.
Black Chunes Productions takes things into New Jersey territory on the flip with “Jerk Yu Body”. Shuffled hi-hats and snares provide the swing while darker leads and chord work bring a tougher edge. Of the four tracks, this is perhaps where the EP’s early-’90s influence comes through most clearly.
Reign Of Rhythm rounds things out with “Organic Pressure”, stripping the formula back to its essentials. Driving drums, organ and very little excess. It’s simple, hypnotic house music where the groove is allowed to do the work.
Across all four tracks, “His Master’s Vinyl EP” understands something that plenty of records influenced by this period miss. The attraction wasn’t simply the equipment, samples or familiar organ sounds. It was the space between them, the swing in the drums and the ability to make relatively few elements feel enormous on a system.
Club U Nite isn’t trying to rewrite the house music rulebook here. It’s having a very good time using one of its best-loved chapters.
