The Birmingham bassline maestro Low Steppa links up with rising UK house talent Capri for a thumping, feel-good workout that lives up to its name.
If you’ve spent any time in the world of modern house music, the name Low Steppa will ring more than a few bells. A longtime fixture in the UK scene, he’s carved out a reputation for fusing chunky basslines with crisp percussion and gospel-tinged vocal cuts. Whether through his own Simma Black imprint or his standout sets at Defected events across the globe—from Croatia to Ministry of Sound—Low Steppa brings a distinctly UK grit to his uplifting house sound. His remix of My Love Is Free and collabs like Heard It All Before have become dancefloor anthems, cementing his status as one of Defected’s most consistent hitters.
On Got The Funk, he teams up with Capri, a newer name on the scene but one to watch, bringing a fresh injection of energy and vibe. From the first few bars, it’s clear this one’s designed for big-room energy. The groove locks in early, driven by a fat, rubbery bassline and crisp, skippy drums that nod to classic UK garage without falling into pastiche. But it’s that gritty vocal hook—“got the funk, can’t fake the funk”—that really does the damage. It struts through the mix like it owns the place, giving the track a raw, infectious charisma that screams old-school attitude with modern polish.
At this point we have to give a nod to Roger Sanchez for the inspiration for this track we assume. His track ‘The Funk’ was a big weapon for us back in 1997!
The production is tight, clean, and purpose-built for sound systems with punch. Subtle filter sweeps and snare rolls keep things moving, while expertly layered FX add that extra sparkle in the breakdowns. It’s the kind of tune that DJs can drop mid-set to reset the energy, or close with for a hands-in-the-air finale.
There’s no overthinking here—just a proper dancefloor bomb that channels funk, house, and UK club culture into something built for 2025’s floors. Defected’s been on a roll lately, and this cut keeps the momentum going.
Out now on Defected, Got The Funk is pure peak-time weaponry, engineered to make dancefloors jack with unapologetic swagger. Get it here.
