Fifteen years after its original release, Lovebirds’ deep house classic returns with fresh interpretations from Schmoov!, Knee Deep, Lovebirds and Atjazz.
Certain records become so closely associated with a particular moment in house music that revisiting them can be a delicate business. Lovebirds’ “Want You In My Soul”, featuring the unmistakable vocals of Stee Downes, is undoubtedly one of them. Originally released on Winding Road Records in 2011, the track became a defining record of the soulful deep house movement, its combination of beautifully understated vocals, warm electronic textures and soaring synthesisers finding an audience far beyond the confines of underground clubs.
Fifteen years later, with the original having accumulated more than 45 million Spotify streams according to the label, Winding Road has brought together Schmoov!, Knee Deep, Atjazz and Lovebirds himself for a new collection of remixes. It’s a carefully chosen group of producers with considerable experience in the deeper and more soulful corners of house music, each approaching the original from a different musical direction.
Schmoov! opens proceedings with an interpretation that looks towards the uplifting sounds of 80s disco. Rather than simply updating the production, the remix reimagines the track within a more expansive dancefloor arrangement, building steadily through layers of bright synthesisers and sweeping strings. The emphasis is on musical progression and feel-good energy, offering DJs a more celebratory alternative to the restrained beauty of the original.
Knee Deep take a considerably tougher approach with their dub, introducing a punchier rhythmic foundation and a darker atmosphere. Fragments of Stee Downes’ vocal move through the arrangement rather than occupying centre stage, allowing the groove and production to take on a greater role. The result is a version that places the emphasis firmly on the dancefloor, retaining enough of the original’s identity to remain recognisable while exploring a more muscular side of deep house.
Lovebirds’ own “Ocean Dub” moves in another direction entirely, bringing together elements of house and hip-hop in a more spacious, atmospheric setting. The underwater imagery suggested by its title is reflected in the production’s immersive character, with Mique’s backing vocals appearing as distant textures within the arrangement. It’s an interesting departure from the original’s familiar structure, exploring its musical ideas through mood and atmosphere rather than conventional remix dynamics.
Atjazz completes the package with his “Love Soul Vocal Remix”, a warmer, more relaxed interpretation that draws on the producer’s longstanding appreciation for soulful instrumentation and intricate percussion. The arrangement places its emphasis on rhythm, melody and the emotional character of the song, offering a sun-soaked alternative that appears particularly well suited to more intimate dancefloors and laid-back listening sessions.
What makes this anniversary collection appealing is the contrast between the four interpretations. Schmoov! brings an uplifting disco sensibility, Knee Deep provide a tougher club-focused alternative, Lovebirds explores a more atmospheric direction, and Atjazz approaches the material with his characteristic soulful warmth.
There is, of course, an argument that a record as complete as “Want You In My Soul” never really needed revisiting. The original’s enduring popularity owes much to its simplicity, the emotional connection between Stee Downes’ vocal and the production, and the way those soaring synth lines unfold without ever overwhelming the song.
But the strongest remix packages aren’t necessarily about improving a record. They’re about finding something different within it, whether that’s a new rhythmic emphasis, a change of atmosphere or an alternative setting for a familiar vocal.
Fifteen years on, “Want You In My Soul” remains a beautifully crafted piece of deep house, and this collection offers four fresh perspectives on a record that has lost little of its appeal. For those who remember the original arriving in 2011, it’s also a welcome excuse to revisit one of the genre’s modern classics.
