Fred Everything joins Montreal musician and producer Teuteu for “Arrêt Infini”, a beautifully crafted four-part journey through deep house, dreamy electronica and late-night ambience.
Three decades into a career that has taken him from 20/20 Vision and OM to Defected and his own Lazy Days Recordings, Fred Everything remains a producer with an unmistakable ear for deep, musical house. For his latest collaboration, the Montreal-based artist joins forces with producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Teuteu for their first release on Winding Road Records.
The pair first crossed paths on Montreal’s music scene, where Teuteu was playing keyboards over a DJ set. Subsequent encounters eventually led them into the studio together, and “Arrêt Infini” feels very much like the product of two musicians allowing ideas to develop naturally.
“Arrêt Infini – Version 1” establishes the mood beautifully. A fluid bassline and crisp house rhythm provide the foundations while dreamy piano, strings and atmospheric pads gradually open up around them. A seductive vocal drifts through the arrangement before the track blossoms into a wonderfully warm crescendo. Deep house with genuine musicality and just enough sunshine creeping through the speakers.
“Version 2” brings things more firmly towards the dancefloor. The bassline becomes repetitive and hypnotic, the drums are clean and purposeful and warm pads hover above the groove. There’s less decoration here, allowing the rhythm to do much of the work. Simple, understated and extremely effective.
The seven-minute “Reprise” is perhaps the most beautiful interpretation of the lot. Congas, strings and restrained percussion take the track somewhere altogether more serene, allowing the melodic elements room to breathe. It’s easy to imagine this drifting across a terrace as daylight begins to appear, or providing the soundtrack to those strange hours when an afterparty has long since forgotten what time it is.
Finally, “Rhythm & Bass” strips things back to percussion and low-end movement. Inspired by the spacey bonus beats and dubby club excursions of the late ’90s, there’s a definite nod towards the loose, psychedelic dancefloor territory associated with the Idjut Boys and DJ Harvey. It’s the DJ tool of the package, but one with considerably more personality than that description might suggest.
Across four versions, Fred Everything and Teuteu manage to explore different moods without losing the identity of the original composition. From warm-up to peak dancefloor, afterhours to sunrise, “Arrêt Infini” is sophisticated deep house made by musicians who understand that sometimes atmosphere and restraint can say far more than another enormous drop.
