Moodena brings his trademark funk-heavy touch to Elado’s “Put Your Hands Together”, tightening the groove with chunky drums, organ and jazz-funk flourishes.
Some remixes are about reinvention. Others simply recognise what’s already working and concentrate on making it work even better on a dancefloor.
Moodena‘s take on Elado’s “Put Your Hands Together” falls very much into the latter camp.
Polish DJ and producer Elado has built his reputation around the sort of musical curiosity that makes genre increasingly irrelevant. A lifelong record collector, his productions and edits have drawn from disco, funk and electronic music alongside less obvious sounds gathered from around the world.
His international profile accelerated considerably following his 2020 debut on New York’s Razor-N-Tape, with his selections and productions subsequently finding support from selectors including Antal, Palms Trax, Hunee, Gerd Janson and Folamour.
It’s an approach that makes Moodena a particularly logical choice to revisit “Put Your Hands Together”.
Long before the Moodena alias began appearing regularly around the upper reaches of the disco charts, the British producer had already spent decades within dance music. He was a co-founder of MN2S, which emerged from its London club nights in the mid-’90s before developing into a wider label, agency and music operation.
The Moodena project subsequently provided another outlet for that experience, particularly after becoming involved with Tropical Disco Records in 2018. Disco may provide the immediate reference point, but house, jazz, soul and funk have always been equally important ingredients in his productions.
That background can be heard throughout this remix.
Rather than attempting to overwhelm Elado’s original with unnecessary additions, Moodena concentrates on the groove. Chunkier drums give the track additional weight, while smooth organ and keyboard passages bring warmth and musicality to an arrangement that has been made noticeably more concise.
There’s plenty of funk in its movement, but crucially it doesn’t become overly polished. The rhythm retains enough looseness to keep things swinging, with the keys providing colour around the groove rather than fighting for attention.
It’s the sort of remix that understands its purpose.
At 4:48, the Extended Remix gets in, establishes the groove and does what it needs to do without stretching an idea simply because contemporary dancefloor convention demands another couple of minutes.
There’s also an obvious meeting of minds here. Elado’s record-collector approach and appetite for digging beyond the obvious sits comfortably alongside Moodena’s own grounding in disco, funk, jazz and house.
The result isn’t a radical transformation of “Put Your Hands Together”.
It doesn’t need to be.
Moodena takes the character of Elado’s original, puts a little more weight underneath it, works those keys into the gaps and sends it back towards the dancefloor.
Sometimes that’s exactly what a good remix should do.
