A soulful collection of remixes that reimagines neo-soul, jazz and house through the lens of some of underground dance music’s most respected producers.
When Mark Adams and The Ubiquity Band first delivered This Is Neo Soul, the intention was clear: celebrate the musical legacy of artists such as Roy Ayers, Lonnie Liston Smith and the wider spiritual soul-jazz movement. What began as a lovingly crafted homage has now evolved into something much broader with Lush Grooves Vol. 1, 2, 3, a comprehensive collection of remixes from previous volumes that connects generations of musicians, producers and dancefloor communities.
At the heart of this project is Mark Adams, Roy Ayers’ long-serving musical director, whose ensemble of accomplished musicians created a body of work rich in live instrumentation, warmth and musical depth. DownJazz Records recognised the potential for these compositions to travel beyond their original form, inviting an impressive roster of producers to reinterpret the material through their own distinct creative lenses.
The result is an album that feels both cohesive and wonderfully varied. Jimpster brings his trademark deep house elegance, adding warmth, groove and subtle sophistication. Kai Alcé injects the soulful spirit of Detroit and Atlanta house culture, while DJ Spinna’s contributions effortlessly blend cosmic jazz influences with dancefloor functionality. Kaidi Tatham’s remixes are among the most distinctive, weaving together broken beat rhythms, jazz-funk musicianship and infectious musicality in a way few producers can match.
Elsewhere, artists such as EVM128, Makez, Bruk Rogers, Matica and Don Surf continue to push the source material into new territories. Across the collection you’ll find deep house, broken beat, future soul, downtempo grooves and jazz-infused club music sitting comfortably alongside one another. Despite the variety of approaches, the spirit of the original recordings remains intact throughout.
What makes Lush Grooves Vol. 1, 2, 3 particularly successful is its balance between musicianship and dancefloor appeal. These are not remixes that simply update older material for modern audiences. Instead, they engage with the original compositions respectfully while offering genuinely fresh interpretations. The album feels rooted in heritage but never trapped by nostalgia.
For fans of Roy Ayers, soulful house, broken beat and contemporary jazz-infused dance music, this collection offers an abundance of quality. More importantly, it highlights how timeless songwriting and skilled musicianship can continue to inspire new generations of producers and listeners alike.
Lush Grooves Vol. 1, 2, 3 stands as both a tribute and a progression; a celebration of the past that keeps its eyes firmly fixed on the future.
