Dennis Liber channels Balearic nights, tropical rhythms and cosmic disco into a warm, collaborative first solo outing for Razor-N-Tape.
After contributing to two of Razor-N-Tape’s Family Affair compilations, Greek-Turkish producer Dennis Liber steps forward with his first solo EP for the Brooklyn label, bringing some of the musical influences gathered during his years living in the Caribbean firmly into focus.
Based in Tulum, Mexico, Liber’s musical world stretches comfortably between Balearic, cosmic disco, Afro rhythms, Italo and house, and “Astro Danza” feels less interested in separating those influences than allowing them to bleed naturally into one another.
The title track, featuring Yasmin Kademian, is the immediate standout for us. “Astro Danza” settles into a seductive nocturnal groove, its Latin rhythmic touches and Spanish vocals moving between cosmic synth lines, warm percussion and a bassline with just enough funk underneath it.
The Extended Mix is where it really comes into its own. Given more room to breathe, the track develops into the kind of late-night Balearic record that doesn’t need an enormous breakdown or obvious peak to make its point. It’s hypnotic rather than forceful, maintaining its groove while the vocals and synth work provide the colour above it.
“Femme Papillon”, featuring Chäm and Shoao, changes the temperature. There’s a dreamier quality here, with the production leaning into cosmic disco and a softer tropical atmosphere while retaining the rhythmic pull established by the opener.
Chäm returns on “Être Heureux”, where Liber heads further towards zouk and disco. It’s an immediately warmer, more celebratory piece of music, built around percussion, melody and an easy sense of movement rather than outright club pressure.
French producer Anoraak also gets his hands on “Être Heureux”, reshaping the track without losing the sun-soaked character at its centre. It provides a complementary alternative to Liber’s original rather than simply turning it into a heavier club version.
There’s a genuine sense of place running through “Astro Danza”. The record was developed over several years across studios in three different countries, with musicians and collaborators from France, Argentina, Greece, Serbia and Switzerland contributing along the way.
That international character comes through in the music. Disco, zouk, funk, jazz and Balearic influences appear throughout, but rarely feel like boxes being deliberately ticked.
Instead, “Astro Danza” feels like a record shaped by people, places and nights spent somewhere considerably warmer.
For us, though, it’s the Extended Mix of the title track that we’ll be returning to. A lovely slice of after-dark cosmic Balearic music and one that should sound particularly good with a Mediterranean sunset disappearing in the rear-view mirror.
