After years spent behind the decks at some of Ibiza’s biggest parties, Butch is finally putting his own name above the door with a three-date residency at Chinois Ibiza.
There aren’t many DJs who could announce an Ibiza residency by immediately telling you which superstar DJs aren’t playing.
But then Butch has rarely done things the conventional way.
This summer, the German DJ and producer launches Come To Butch, his first event residency on the island, taking over Chinois Ibiza for two Tuesdays in August before returning for one final closing party in October.
Three parties. No sprawling summer-long programme and, judging by Butch’s own announcement, absolutely no intention of following the usual Ibiza residency formula.
“Adam Port, Solomun, Michael Bibi, Pawsa, none of these people are playing there,” jokes Butch. “But I will be there, and other DJs. The event is Come To Butch, and The Butch will handpick you some really nice DJs.”
Behind the humour is a fairly simple proposition: Butch booking DJs he genuinely wants to hear.
Three Nights, Hand-Picked By Butch
Come To Butch opens at Chinois on Tuesday 18 August, with Butch joined by Demi Riquísimo, Jennifer Loveless B2B Fafi Abdel Nour and Manu Gonzalez.
The residency returns one week later on Tuesday 25 August, this time bringing together Butch, Paramida, Najeh and Shawnecy.
Then, after a break, Come To Butch returns on Friday 16 October for its closing party, where Butch will be joined by two as-yet-unannounced special guests described simply as part of the “real Butch family”.
It’s a deliberately compact residency and one that appears designed around the party rather than simply filling a calendar.
Musically, expect the same refusal to stay in one lane that has characterised Butch’s career: house and electronica moving between deep, groovy, psychedelic and euphoric territory, with plenty of room for the unexpected along the way.
From Other People’s Parties To His Own
For Butch, an Ibiza residency of his own has been a long time coming.
Born and raised in Mainz and of Turkish heritage, he has spent years establishing himself as one of electronic music’s most distinctive DJs and producers.
His relationship with Ibiza stretches across appearances at some of the island’s best-known institutions, including DC-10, Circoloco, Pacha, Amnesia and Ushuaïa, while further afield his career has taken him to Fabric, Time Warp, Sonus and countless clubs and festivals around the world.
At the heart of it all has always been a certain unpredictability.
A Butch set can move from slow-burning psychedelia into house, disco and funk before suddenly dropping something that by conventional logic probably shouldn’t work at all.
Usually, it does.
That same restless approach runs through his production catalogue. Over the years Butch has released music through labels including Defected, Running Back, Permanent Vacation, Rekids, Innervisions, Cocoon and Crosstown Rebels, alongside his more experimental work with Ricardo Villalobos under their ButRic project.
Recent months have continued that prolific run with releases across Rekids, Life And Death, Cocoon, Running Back, Permanent Vacation and his own Finicky imprint, with further material lined up for Saved Records and VOD.
Come To Butch…
The residency’s personality doesn’t stop with the line-ups.
Anyone following Butch’s socials may already have encountered the wonderfully ridiculous Come To Butch campaign, which transforms him into a succession of increasingly bizarre characters, each beckoning people towards the party.
Hairy lady Butch. Showgirl Butch. Witch Butch. Mermaid Butch. Fortune teller Butch. Cowboy Butch riding a fire-spitting horse.
Subtle it isn’t.
But it’s also entirely in keeping with an artist who was poking fun at DJ culture through his cult Butch TV YouTube series long before every touring DJ needed a social media content strategy.
Behind all of the absurdity, however, sits an interesting idea.
At a time when Ibiza’s biggest parties can revolve around enormous line-ups, superstar billing and cavernous venues, Come To Butch is pitching something a little more intimate: a respected selector, a relatively small number of dates and guests chosen because the host actually wants them there.
Chinois feels well suited to that approach. With a capacity of around 1,400, the Ibiza Marina club offers a setting where the relationship between booth and dancefloor remains an important part of the experience.
After spending countless summers playing other people’s Ibiza parties, Butch finally gets to build one in his own image.
Unpredictable music, carefully chosen guests and absolutely no shortage of self-deprecating nonsense.
