Fiery, organ-powered house from Alma Negra lands on Toy Tonics with Free, a soulful, groove-led EP that plays to all their strengths.
Founded in 2013 and centred around brothers Dersu and Diego Figueira, Alma Negra have spent the past decade shaping a richly hybrid sound, drawing on Afrobeat, Caribbean rhythms, Latin disco and deep house. That global, groove-first approach makes their debut on Toy Tonics feel like a natural fit.
“What Would You Do” opens with loose, jam-driven energy. Warm Hammond lines glide over a subtle acid undercurrent, giving the track a live, improvisational feel that reflects their roots in both DJ culture and live instrumentation. “Where Is The Love” follows with a deeper, more percussive groove, its rolling rhythms and organic textures leaning into the Afro-Caribbean influences that define much of their sound.
On the flip, “Free” shifts into synth-rich boogie territory, balancing analogue textures with a steady, club-ready pulse. Closing track “Sweetheart” is the most heads-down cut here, dusty, slightly dubbed-out and built for those early morning moments.
Final thoughts
A cohesive and characterful EP that captures Alma Negra at their best, globally informed, rhythm-led and rooted in one simple idea: it has to feel good. Get it here.
