Max Essa and Eddie C have readied four deep funk grooves for the always impressive Razor N Tape label this March.

A real Englishman in Tokyo, Max Essa is a prolific artist and Jansen Jardin label head. A longstanding catalogue of releases on labels like Is It Balearic?, Aficionado, Music For Dreams, Hell Yeah Recordings and Palms & Charms are perfect viewpoints in Essa’s sound and vision and now this new release on Razor N Tape is bolstering the catalogue’s score. Joining Max is Eddie C. A Canadian by birth who is now based out of Berlin, Eddie has releases on the likes of Karat Records, Craft Music, Hot’n’Spicy and now both artists debut on Razor N Tape.

‘Melon Steppin’ sits about the 110BPM range and for us dances within the Nu-Disco genre. Blending Acid-like bass tones, loose organic drum arrangements and a nice cool piano line, this dreamy nostalgic vibe could be considered a Balearic piece of loveliness. ‘Save Me’ is a playful bass-led, percussive number that has an enchanting Rhodes melody coupled with delayed synth chords and tropical sounding percussive notes. Warm and fun, this is a groove. ‘We Live In The Hills’ is a 80’s type deep funk machine with synth samples, yacht-type piano chords and cool electric guitars riffs, this is straight out of Miami Vice. ‘Sixth Bridge’ rounds off the EP with its kitsch late 70’s early 80’s night-time vibe. We thought of Rocky driving his car late at night in Philly whilst listening to a Nu Disco Miami heater, maybe we have just a wild imagination. Who knows.

The ‘We Live In The Hills’ EP is out on Razor N Tape from March 8th, 2024. Pre order here.
