We chat to East London artist Slxm Sol fresh from being one to watch in 2024 by DJ Mag and with new music just dropped, we strike whilst the irons hot.

Also known as Michael M, East London talent Slxm Sol started out on pirate radio back in the day and has also worked as a sound engineer over the past years for the likes of Rudimental, Dream Mclean and the glorious House Gospel Choir. His new release on Soul Quest Records, the label Slxm Sol is behind along with Max Sinàl continues with a soulful groove vibe. ‘SQR006’ is out now and contains three tracks that each offer rolling, joyous House grooves that are simply cool.

We sat down recently with Slxm Sol to talk about all things life, music and inspiration, here’s what went down….

KOTT: Hey Slxm Sol, Congratulations on releasing your first EP ‘SQR006’ on Soul Quest Records. How does it feel?

Slxm Sol: Thanks a lot! Releasing ‘SQR006’ feels like unlocking a new level in my musical journey. After years of engineering and producing for others, stepping into the spotlight with my solo project is truly gratifying.

KOTT: Talk us through the release, are there any standout tracks you’re particularly excited about?

Slxm Sol: Definitely! One track that stands out for me is ‘Molecular.’ I aimed to encapsulate the intimate vibe of a London party in a small venue. The energy and atmosphere in that track resonate with the essence of those unforgettable nights.

KOTT: ‘Wish You Could’ features the beautiful vocals of Elsa, how did that collaboration come about?

Slxm Sol: Ah, the collaboration with Elsa was a natural progression. After co-producing ‘Cannot Stay’ with her and Beanie Bhebhe, I played the backing track for ‘Wish You Could’ during one of our sessions, and Elsa worked her magic on it.

KOTT: You co-run Soul Quest Records with Max Sinal, how did you guys meet?

Slxm Sol: Max and I go way back to the early days of pirate radio in the UK Garage and Grime scene. Growing up in the same neighborhood, we crossed paths and shared a passion for music. It was a natural evolution from there. Soul Quest Records, founded by myself, Max Sinal, and Leon Sweeney early last year, has been an incredible journey that allows us to curate and share music we’re truly passionate about.

KOTT: You started out in the Grime scene, how did you discover your love for Deep House?

Slxm Sol: Absolutely, my roots in the Grime scene are strong, but I always had a love for the deeper sounds of house music even during those early days. It’s about embracing different facets of music that resonate with me.

KOTT: Can you describe the connection between your music and your London roots, and how they continue to influence your work today?

Slxm Sol: London is a vibrant mix of cultures and diversity, and that eclectic energy finds its way into my music. Whether it’s the rhythm or the mood, I strive to express the multicultural essence of the city in my work.

KOTT: Which other artists have had a big influence on your sound?

Slxm Sol: St.Germain: All of St.Germain’s work, especially the ‘Tourist’ album, has been a huge inspiration. The blend of jazz and electronic elements is something I’ve always admired.

Chaos in the CBD: I Fell in love with their EP ‘Midnight in Peckham’ from 2015. Their ability to create immersive and evolving soundscapes has definitely left a mark on my own approach to music.

Slxm Sol: Absolutely, before each session, I take about 20-30 minutes to meditate. It helps clear my mind and puts me in a creative headspace. Finding that balance is key to keeping the inspiration flowing.

KOTT: What’s one artist we should be listening to right now?

Slxm Sol: Without a doubt, check out 2fox, a dynamic duo consisting of Max Sinal and Renell Shaw. They’ve been putting in serious work over the last few years, and their latest single ‘So Long’ on Soul Quest Records is a testament to their talent.

KOTT: What else do you have coming up that you would like to mention?

Slxm Sol: There’s a lot in the pipeline! More collaborations, singles, and another EP are on the horizon this year. I’m also excited about working with both established and up-and-coming artists on various projects. Stay tuned for some exciting releases!
