The German house veteran returns with another effortlessly classy three-track release, blending irresistible grooves, warm melodies and a touch of disco magic.
Few producers have navigated the changing landscape of house music quite like Ian Pooley. From his early techno-influenced productions to the warm, soulful sounds of albums such as ‘Meridian’ and ‘Since Then’, the German producer has spent more than three decades developing a style that’s instantly recognisable. Now he’s back on his own Pooled Music imprint with ‘You Know’, a three-track release that finds him in particularly fine form.
The title track is a beautifully crafted slice of house music, bringing together all the right ingredients without ever sounding overcrowded. Rousing piano chords loop away over a deep, rumbling bassline, while ethereal female vocal ad-libs drift through the arrangement. A soaring string line adds a little drama, with funky brass riffs providing another welcome layer of musical warmth. It’s a wonderfully infectious groove, full of those subtle touches that make Pooley’s productions such a pleasure to listen to.
‘Con Amor’ takes things in a slightly different direction, delivering what we’d happily describe as a future disco machine. Soaring synths, cool, funky guitar licks and a superb rolling bassline combine to create a track that’s bursting with character. There’s a lovely sense of movement throughout, with its uplifting melodies and effortless groove making this one particularly appealing for those sun-soaked afternoon sessions or early evening dancefloors.
Completing the release is a dub of ‘You Know’, offering a more stripped-back alternative to the original and giving DJs another way to work that infectious groove into their sets.
What makes this release so enjoyable is its simplicity. Pooley doesn’t need to rely on elaborate breakdowns or unnecessary studio tricks to make his music work. The grooves are strong, the musical elements are beautifully judged, and everything sits exactly where it should.
Three quality cuts from one of house music’s most dependable producers. ‘You Know’ is another fine addition to the Pooled Music catalogue and further proof that Ian Pooley remains a master of his craft.
