Colombian producer Felipe Gordon delivers four wonderfully inventive slices of jazz-infused house, cosmic boogie and futuristic funk on Chicago’s Star Creature imprint.
There are few contemporary house producers who manage to combine musical sophistication with genuine dancefloor appeal quite like Felipe Gordon. The Colombian artist has developed a distinctive sound over the years, drawing on jazz, funk, soul and the deeper corners of house music, yet somehow making everything feel effortlessly connected.
His latest outing finds him joining forces with Chicago’s Star Creature Universal Vibrations, a label whose love of cosmic disco, modern boogie and leftfield electronic funk makes it a particularly fitting home for his music.
The Multicolor EP has apparently been taking shape for the best part of a decade, with Gordon bringing together a selection of collaborators across four tracks. Among them are Black Loops’ Riccardo Paffetti, Life On Planets and Daniel Andrés, each contributing to a release that feels wonderfully varied while retaining a strong musical identity.
And what a colourful collection it is.
Opening track ‘Nine Lives’ immediately makes its intentions clear. A cosmic, jazz-infused house groove built around an absolutely wicked bassline, there’s something about its low-end swagger that brings to mind Chicken Lips’ ‘He Not In’.
A soulful male vocal softens the edges, giving the track a lovely warmth, but it’s when those jazzy guitar riffs begin to work their way through the arrangement that things really take flight. The combination of funk, jazz and rolling house rhythms is irresistible, and the result sounds like a modern funky house classic in the making.
‘I Know, You Know’ takes things in a slightly different direction, settling into a chugging groove with a wonderfully bluesy vocal at its heart. Delicate jazz piano lines dance around the rhythm, while hissing hi-hats and warm washes of strings add depth and movement.
There’s a lovely balance between the rawness of the groove and the sophistication of the musical arrangement. Nothing feels forced, with each element finding its place as the track unfolds.
Then comes ‘Hear Me Out’, which might just be the most intriguing selection of the four.
Imagine what a previously unheard Prince production might sound like if it suddenly appeared in 2026, and you’ll have some idea of the territory we’re exploring here.
Plunging synths, warm electronic pads and snappy, hissing four-to-the-floor drums provide the foundation, while an intergalactic boogie melody winds its way through the arrangement. It’s funky, futuristic and wonderfully eccentric, with a sound that seems to exist somewhere between Minneapolis funk and deep-space disco.
Closing track ‘Love, No Control’ continues that cosmic journey, although there’s an even greater sense of musical activity here.
Elastic synth-bass lines flex beneath manic piano passages, while layers of different synthesizers seem to be having their own conversations across the mix. Yet rather than becoming overcrowded, the individual elements somehow work together, creating a gloriously busy piece of cosmic boogie funk.
It’s a track full of little details, the sort of production that reveals something new each time you listen.
What makes The Multicolor EP so enjoyable is its refusal to settle into one particular sound. There’s jazz, soul, funk, house and boogie woven throughout, but the music never feels like an exercise in revisiting the past.
Instead, Felipe Gordon and his collaborators take those influences and shape them into something fresh, playful and thoroughly contemporary.
Star Creature has always had a knack for finding records that blur the boundaries between the dancefloor and the more adventurous corners of electronic music, and this release sits comfortably within that tradition.
Four tracks, four different personalities, and plenty of musical imagination.
A wonderfully colourful EP, in every sense.
