A peak-time disco-house workout from one of the UK’s most recognisable funky house producers.
There are certain producers whose records carry an unmistakable signature, and Jay Vegas is certainly one of them. His particular blend of funk, disco and house has become instantly recognisable, built around infectious grooves, clever sampling and an understanding of exactly what makes a dancefloor move.
His musical journey stretches back to the early 90s, when he worked as a session keyboardist, contributing hooks and melodies for other producers. One particularly interesting credit is the piano riff on K-Klass’s remix of Bobby Brown’s ‘Two Can Play That Game’, a record that remains a favourite with house music fans more than three decades later.
Since then, Jay has established himself as a prolific producer, releasing music through labels including Guesthouse Music, Salted Music and Toolroom Records, while building a strong following through his own Hot Stuff Records imprint.
His latest offering, ‘Party People’, sees him doing what he does best.
Built around a chunky, sample-laden groove, this is an uptempo house record with its sights firmly set on the peak-time dancefloor.
A substantial bassline provides the foundation, while a spoken male preacher vocal brings an infectious sense of energy and anticipation. Add in a familiar-sounding diva ad-lib, punchy brass stabs and a relentless rhythmic drive, and the ingredients are already in place for a proper party record.
But it’s the arrangement that really makes things interesting.
Jay works the breakdowns beautifully, introducing funky guitar passages that give the groove room to breathe before gradually rebuilding the energy. The interplay between the brass, guitars and vocal samples creates that wonderful feeling of organised chaos that the best disco-house records seem to manage so effortlessly.
There’s nothing overly complicated about the approach, nor does there need to be. This is music designed to bring people together on a dancefloor, delivered with the confidence of someone who has spent years understanding how to do exactly that.
And when everything comes back together, the result is a full-blooded funky disco-house workout.
‘Party People’ is another fine example of Jay Vegas taking familiar musical ingredients and giving them his own distinctive twist.
Turn it up, find a busy dancefloor and let it do its thing.
