Chicago house stalwart Stacy Kidd brings gospel-inspired energy, rolling basslines and uplifting piano to Hard Times Records’ ADE sampler.

Hard Times Records welcomes Chicago’s Stacy Kidd to the fold with “Get Up”, a spirited slice of piano-driven house that draws on the city’s rich musical heritage while keeping its sights firmly on the dancefloor.

With a career spanning releases on Defected, Dance Mania and Masters At Work’s MAW imprint, Kidd has long been a familiar name to those who appreciate house music with a little soul in its bones. His arrival on Hard Times feels like a natural fit for a label whose own history is so closely connected to the roots of American house.

“Get Up” wastes little time establishing its intentions. A wonderfully rounded, rolling bassline provides the foundation, while lively piano chords and infectious vocal snippets urging us to “Get Up!” set the mood.

It’s those church-inspired organ riffs that really give the record its character, darting in and out of the arrangement with an almost gospel-like exuberance. There’s a joyous, Sunday-morning-meets-Saturday-night quality to the production, with the organ and bass working particularly well together.

As the track reaches its breakdown, the piano takes centre stage, bringing an extra lift before the groove returns in full flow.

There’s nothing unnecessarily complicated here. Kidd understands the value of a great bassline, an uplifting piano and a few well-placed vocal hooks. Put them together with the right amount of energy and you’ve got a record that does exactly what its title suggests.

Unashamedly feel-good Chicago house, and a fine introduction to Stacy Kidd’s relationship with Hard Times.
