Dimitri From Paris revisits The Cool-Notes’ 1985 soul classic, delivering two disco and boogie-inspired interpretations for Dafia Records.
Few producers have demonstrated quite the same understanding of disco’s musical heritage as Dimitri From Paris. His ability to revisit classic recordings while respecting their original character has made him one of the most dependable names in the world of disco, soul and sophisticated dance music.
His latest project sees him turn his attention to “Spend The Night”, the much-loved 1985 single from South London soul outfit The Cool-Notes, with two new interpretations arriving on Dafia Records.
Originally formed in the late 1970s, The Cool-Notes enjoyed considerable success during the following decade, with records including “Spend The Night” and “In Your Car” helping establish their place in British soul and R&B history. Their sound captured a particular moment in UK music, when polished soul arrangements, electronic instrumentation and dancefloor-friendly rhythms were increasingly finding their way into the mainstream.
Four decades later, those recordings continue to resonate, particularly among collectors and DJs with an appreciation for the more soulful side of eighties dance music.
Following last year’s remix package of “You’re Never Too Young”, Dafia Records returns to the group’s catalogue, this time inviting Dimitri to put his unmistakable touch on another favourite.
The release opens with “Spend The Night (Dimitri From Paris Remix)”, a contemporary reworking that draws on the original’s eighties boogie character. Dimitri’s reputation for carefully considered arrangements makes him a natural choice for material like this, where the appeal lies as much in the songwriting and vocal performance as the groove itself.
The second interpretation, “Spend The Night (Dimitri From Paris Is Nightdubbin)”, offers an alternative take for DJs and listeners who enjoy exploring different sides of a familiar recording.
Together, the two versions celebrate a song that has remained part of British soul music’s rich legacy, while introducing it to another generation of disco and house enthusiasts.
There’s something particularly fitting about Dimitri revisiting The Cool-Notes. His career has been built around an appreciation of the musical connections between soul, funk, disco and house, and “Spend The Night” belongs to the era when many of those influences were coming together in exciting ways.
With The Cool-Notes themselves enjoying a renewed period of activity, including new material and plans to return to live performance, this release arrives at an interesting moment in the group’s story.
For those who remember the original, it’s a welcome return to a familiar favourite. For anyone discovering The Cool-Notes through Dimitri’s remixes, it’s also a good reason to explore one of British soul’s enduring acts.
