Pandar and Faro channel broken beat, soulful house, jazz and deep grooves into the four-track “Destination Mystery EP”, the debut release on Every Cloud.
Some collaborations are less about bringing two different musical worlds together and more about finally documenting a connection that’s already been there for years. That’s very much the feeling behind “Destination Mystery EP”, the new four-track collaboration between UK artists Pandar and Faro.
Friends, DJs and selectors with a shared appreciation for house, soul, jazz, broken beat, disco and R&B, the pair first began working on the project during a trip to Wales in early 2024. What followed was a deliberately unhurried process, with the music developing through regular face-to-face studio sessions rather than being assembled remotely.
That chemistry is immediately apparent on the title track.
Written alongside longtime friend and collaborator Goldbar, “Destination Mystery” sits beautifully between broken beat and soulful house, introducing Latin-leaning percussion and jazz influences without allowing any single element to dominate. There’s a lovely looseness to the rhythm, while the song’s underlying message of living in the present gives Faro’s vocal something more substantial to work with than the usual dancefloor refrain.
“Ur Vibe” moves things towards deeper house territory. Warm instrumentation and soulful melodies sit against a more insistent rhythmic foundation, with Faro’s vocal exploring attraction and the intensity of a relationship. There’s plenty happening musically, touching on jazz, disco and R&B, but Pandar keeps the groove sufficiently focused for the dancefloor.
The mood changes again with “Strange Times”, the first track the pair wrote during that initial Wales session. Longer, deeper and more reflective, it’s perhaps the EP’s most understated moment. Smooth house rhythms are allowed room to breathe, creating the sort of patient groove that rewards letting the record play rather than searching for an immediate payoff.
Closing things out, Pandar takes “Destination Mystery” back into the club with the “Dedication Dub”. Vocals become texture rather than the focal point as syncopated percussion, rolling rhythms and dubbed-out fragments push the original further towards broken beat and deep house. It’s not simply an alternative version, but a useful counterpart that gives DJs another route into the track.
Across four cuts, “Destination Mystery EP” feels refreshingly unconcerned with sitting neatly inside one genre. Broken beat gives way to house, jazz rubs alongside disco and soul, and the musical relationship between Pandar’s production and Faro’s vocals holds everything together.
It’s also a fitting opening statement for Every Cloud. If the intention is to build a label around soulful, groove-led music with personality rather than rigid genre boundaries, “Destination Mystery” provides a pretty convincing starting point.
