Operating under his Scheng alias, German producer Kolter slips out a seriously effective deep tech house roller via his Bandcamp page.

Sometimes the records that arrive without the accompanying press campaign are the ones worth paying attention to.

“I Need More Muscles” sees Kolter working under his Scheng alias, delivering a stripped-back club track centred around a wonderfully bulbous bassline that rolls underneath the entire production.

The groove is deep and muscular without becoming overly heavy. Crisp, sharply programmed percussion keeps things moving while rave-flavoured stabs punctuate the rhythm, but it’s the lead synth that really catches the ear. Rich, textured and slightly menacing, it gives the track considerably more character than your average heads-down tech house workout.

Then comes the curveball.

A familiar riff lifted from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” suddenly enters the equation, an unexpected sample that shouldn’t necessarily belong in a groove like this but somehow fits perfectly. Rather than dominating the record, it’s used as another piece of the track’s slightly mischievous personality.

There isn’t a great deal of unnecessary decoration here. “I Need More Muscles” is essentially bass, drums, stabs and synths assembled with the sort of restraint that makes a club record work.

This one has some serious weight behind it.
