Detroit veteran Alton Miller brings his unmistakable musical touch to Frequencies Rhythm Life with four beautifully crafted cuts of deep, soulful and jazz-infused house.
There are certain producers whose records seem to carry an effortless sense of musicality, and Detroit’s Alton Miller has been operating in that territory for decades. On “Still Purpose”, he joins Italian imprint Frequencies Rhythm Life for a four-track EP that demonstrates just how effective deep house can be when groove and musicianship are allowed to do the talking.
Opening cut “Khomotso’s Jam” immediately sets the tone. Warm percussion and a gently bouncing rhythm are joined by cosmic textures and subtle Afro-house influences, creating something deep and hypnotic without ever becoming overly serious. There’s movement everywhere, but plenty of space too.
“Solar Return” pushes further into Miller’s jazzier side. A rubbery bassline provides the foundation while echoing electronics and expressive synth work gradually unfold above it. It’s loose, colourful and distinctly Detroit, carrying that wonderful feeling of musicians actually playing with the groove rather than simply programming around it.
On the flip, “Love Is On Our Side” brings soul firmly to the foreground. Breezy and understated, there’s a warmth running through the track that makes it feel equally suited to an intimate basement or a sun-drenched afternoon session. Miller has always understood that deep doesn’t have to mean dark, and this is a perfect example.
“Getting Ready” closes the EP on perhaps its brightest note. Colourful melodies and an uplifting groove give the track an almost effortless sense of optimism, rounding out the record without disturbing the understated mood established across the previous three cuts.
There’s nothing unnecessarily complicated about “Still Purpose”. Instead, Alton Miller relies on the ingredients that have served him so well throughout his career: warm grooves, jazz-influenced musicianship, soul and that unmistakable Detroit sensibility.
Four tracks with four subtly different personalities, tied together by a producer who still understands exactly what makes deep house music special.
