Kevin Saunderson’s timeless Inner City anthem returns with a tasteful Roland Leesker remix that respectfully updates one of Detroit house music’s most enduring classics.

Few records encapsulate the optimism and uplifting spirit of early ’90s house music quite like Inner City’s “Pennies From Heaven”. Originally released in 1992, Kevin Saunderson’s production, paired with Ann Saunderson’s unmistakable vocal, became another defining moment in the Detroit pioneer’s remarkable catalogue. More than three decades later, Definitive Recordings hands the keys to German producer Roland Leesker, who wisely chooses evolution over reinvention.

Rather than dismantling the original, Leesker understands exactly what made “Pennies From Heaven” so special in the first place. The iconic piano stabs remain front and centre, Ann Saunderson’s soaring vocal continues to deliver its uplifting message with effortless conviction, while shimmering strings and subtle melodic flourishes preserve the warmth and emotion that made the original such a dancefloor favourite.

Underneath, however, sits a tougher, more contemporary groove. Chunkier drums, a deeper low-end and a tightly locked rhythm section provide the remix with enough modern punch to sit comfortably alongside today’s house productions without sacrificing the soul of the original. It’s a careful balancing act that many remixers fail to achieve, but Leesker manages it with impressive restraint.

The accompanying acappella tool is another welcome inclusion, offering DJs additional flexibility while paying further respect to the record’s long-standing place within house music culture.

Perhaps the greatest compliment that can be paid to this remix is that it never tries to overshadow the source material. Instead, it serves as a thoughtful update that introduces one of Detroit’s finest house records to a new generation while giving long-time fans another reason to revisit it.

House music has always been built on timeless records finding new life through fresh interpretations, and this release is another fine example of that tradition done properly.
