Deep house with warmth, restraint and musical sophistication. Philippa’s debut Panther Cuts release balances hypnotic club energy with rich melodic detail and soulful expression.

With releases on respected labels such as Freerange and Local Talk already under her belt, Philippa has steadily established herself as one of the more musically minded producers operating within contemporary house music. Panther Cuts Volume One marks the launch of her own imprint and serves as a concise but effective introduction to the label’s concept: one track aimed squarely at the dancefloor and another exploring a more expressive, melodic direction.

Opening cut Second Nature immediately locks into a hypnotic groove. Built around rolling drums, looping piano motifs and subtle sample work, the track embraces repetition in the best possible way. Rather than relying on obvious peaks and drops, Philippa allows the groove to gradually unfold, creating tension through movement and atmosphere. There are shades of classic deep house throughout, but the production feels modern and understated, with a shadowy late-night character that reveals more with each listen.

On Motion State, Philippa shifts focus towards melody and songwriting. Anchored by a warm Juno bassline, the track introduces vocalist Séna, whose fluid performance sits beautifully within the arrangement. The interplay between the vocal phrases, evolving harmonies and gently shifting rhythms gives the track a natural sense of flow, drawing influence from jazz, soul and house without becoming overly complex. It’s elegant, emotional and effortlessly musical.

The accompanying dub version strips things back for DJs, allowing the groove and instrumentation to take centre stage while retaining much of the original’s warmth and character. It’s a smart inclusion and completes the package nicely.

What stands out most across Panther Cuts Volume One is Philippa’s understanding of balance. These tracks are sophisticated without feeling academic, musical without losing sight of the dancefloor, and contemporary while remaining rooted in house music’s deeper traditions. As introductions go, this is a strong statement of intent and an encouraging glimpse of what Panther Cuts may have in store.
