Toronto Hustle and Sean Roman deliver another classy slice of deep house, backed by heavyweight remixes from Byron The Aquarius and Trackheadz.
Canadian house stalwarts Toronto Hustle and Sean Roman return to Wolf Music Recordings with Social Narcotics, a four-track package that comfortably reinforces their reputation for crafting deep, soulful club music with substance. Following last year’s excellent The Unity EP, the duo once again tap into the timeless qualities that have made them favourites amongst discerning house heads, delivering grooves that feel rooted in the golden era of 90s deep house while remaining firmly relevant to today’s dancefloors.
The EP opens in style with Byron The Aquarius taking first remix duties. As soon as his name appears on a release, expectations naturally rise, and thankfully he delivers another masterclass. His interpretation of Social Narcotics is rich, musical and beautifully understated. Warm Rhodes chords drift through the mix, intricate details reveal themselves with each listen, and the groove remains effortlessly deep throughout. It’s the sort of house record that rewards proper listening while still carrying plenty of dancefloor weight.
Trackheadz, the long-standing partnership of Nick Holder and Tyrone Solomon, take things in a more direct direction on their remix. Holder’s status as one of Canada’s true house music pioneers needs little introduction, and together with Solomon they inject the track with additional drive, punch and peak-time energy. Crisp snares, rolling percussion and a tougher groove make this one particularly effective for busier moments on the floor without sacrificing the soul at the heart of the production.
Flip over and the original version reminds you exactly why Toronto Hustle and Sean Roman continue to earn respect across the underground scene. Social Narcotics combines warm basslines, hypnotic rhythms and subtle spoken-word elements into a groove that unfolds patiently. There’s a clear nod to classic Detroit and deep house traditions, but the production remains clean, contemporary and highly playable. The social commentary woven into the vocal snippets adds an extra layer of intrigue without ever becoming heavy-handed.
The accompanying Late Night Dub strips things back further, allowing the groove to take centre stage. Echoing synths, weighty kicks and spacious production create a heads-down atmosphere designed for those later hours when subtlety often proves more powerful than excess. It’s a classy closer that highlights the duo’s understanding of restraint and mood.
Wolf Music has built its reputation on releasing house music with depth, soul and longevity, and Social Narcotics fits comfortably within that tradition. Strong originals, heavyweight remix support and grooves that feel equally suited to home listening and club play make this another highly recommended addition to the label’s catalogue.
