Boston duo Soul Clap make their Freerange debut with a funk-heavy, emotionally charged EP rooted in classic house tradition.
As Freerange Records gears up to celebrate 30 years in the game in 2026, the label kicks things off in fitting style by welcoming Soul Clap for their first ever release on the imprint. It is a natural pairing. Both Freerange and Soul Clap share a deep respect for house music’s lineage, where groove, soul and club functionality are always placed first.
The Drowning In Your Love EP sees the Boston duo leaning fully into their EFUNK philosophy, blurring the lines between funk, house and soul with confidence and warmth. Longtime collaborator Shaun J. Wright takes centre stage on the title track, delivering a heartfelt vocal performance that brings emotional weight without sacrificing dancefloor drive. Dubby effects, subtle break influences and a loose west coast house swing give the track a timeless feel that lingers long after the record stops spinning.
The Storm Drums Mix strips the track back into a raw, percussive DJ tool. With the groove locked firmly front and centre, it offers plenty of space for creative mixing while retaining the original’s energy and momentum. It is built for peak-time moments where drums and flow do the heavy lifting.
On the flip, EFUNK Anthem (The Funk Mix) delivers exactly what the title promises. Jackin, hardware-driven and soaked in Chicago attitude, it is pure club fuel with classic grit and playful swagger. The Stripped Mix takes a deeper turn, revealing a hypnotic bassline, Detroit-flavoured chords and smoky late-night textures that work perfectly in more heads-down moments.
Closing things out is Drowning In Your Love (Wind-Appella), a tension-building DJ tool built around atmospheric effects and Shaun J. Wright’s haunting vocal lines. It works equally well as a subtle reset or an emotive outro, adding another layer of versatility to the EP.
Soul Clap’s debut on Freerange feels both celebratory and assured. It bridges soulful songwriting and underground club sensibilities with ease, honouring house music’s past while keeping its funk-driven spirit very much alive. A strong statement from both artist and label as Freerange steps confidently toward its milestone year.
