Miles Away Records opens a new chapter in its journey with Let Me Down Easy, the first in its Echoes From series.

The project celebrates Cheri Records, a small New Jersey label whose brief but brilliant existence helped shape the course of soul, disco and ultimately house music.

Founded in 1974 by Boo Frazier, Cheri Records only released eleven titles between 1974 and 1982. On paper, that might seem modest, but the reality is far more significant. Behind those releases lies a legacy that connects to some of the most important names in dance and soul music history. Patrick Adams, Larry Levan, Tom Moulton and even MF Doom trace their influences back to this label, while today’s tastemakers like David Morales, Dave Lee, Danny Krivit and Colin Curtis still draw inspiration from its sound.

The compilation brings together the finest moments from Cheri’s catalogue, featuring Rare Pleasure, The Family Tree, Julius Brockington, Roslyn & Charles, Hyla Parker and Brooklyn People. Every track carries that unmistakable mix of gospel energy and soulful groove that gave Cheri its edge. Rare Pleasure’s Let Me Down Easy is a clear standout, a track that captures the emotion, optimism and dancefloor warmth that defined the label. Julius Brockington’s funk-driven organ work and The Family Tree’s raw vocal harmonies add more layers to the story, while Roslyn & Charles and Brooklyn People bring the heartfelt soul and spiritual uplift that made Cheri’s sound so special.

The presentation is equally impressive. The vinyl edition comes in a gatefold sleeve with detailed liner notes and exclusive interviews with Colin Curtis and David Morales. Both share personal reflections that underline the label’s impact, not just as a collection of records but as a creative force that bridged gospel roots with dancefloor innovation.

Let Me Down Easy is more than just a compilation. It is a powerful reminder that the underground always finds a way to shape the mainstream. For collectors, DJs and fans of deep soul and rare groove, this release is essential listening and a fitting start to Miles Away’s Echoes From series.
