Cologne’s downtempo craftsmen return to their signature slow burn sound with a poetic, dub soaked meditation on love.
Established in 1994, Solar Moon are one of Cologne’s enduring underground exports. The downtempo collective, made up of Georg Boskamp, Tom Dams and Uwe Lehr, have quietly built a catalogue rooted in atmosphere, groove and emotional depth. With The Way We Fall, they reconnect with that original DNA.
Following their club leaning Supermax cover Lovemachine, this latest single shifts back into their more contemplative terrain. Featuring Virginia based love poet JEN aka Jennifer Schwed, the track is a slow burning downtempo piece that feels as relevant now as it did when it was first recorded around 2016.
From the outset, a deep and dubby backbeat rolls patiently beneath layers of hazy pads and spacious textures. The groove does not push forward aggressively. Instead, it smoulders, creating a hypnotic undercurrent that pulls the listener inward. Sub bass frequencies hum with warmth, while subtle percussive details flicker around the edges of the mix.
JEN’s vocal performance is the emotional anchor. Her delivery is languid and intimate, blending spoken word sensibility with melodic phrasing. She explores the causes and consequences of falling in love with poetic clarity, allowing each line to breathe and settle. The chemistry between voice and production feels organic, unforced and deeply immersive.
There is an undeniable Trip Hop spirit running through the track, echoing the cinematic depth associated with Massive Attack. It is easy to understand why sections of the German music press once referred to Solar Moon as Germany’s Massive Attack. The comparison lies in the atmosphere, the restraint and the ability to create tension without overstatement.
As the second single leading up to the Blackbook album re release scheduled for late March 2026, The Way We Fall serves as both a reminder and a statement. Nearly a decade after its original recording, it still resonates with clarity and emotional weight.
On the flip is ‘Ghost of Mount Zion Dub’. Trip hop and roots reggae are deeply connected through a shared musical ancestry rooted in Jamaican sound system culture and this is captured perfectly here with this slow-burning groove laced with delicate piano keys and plunging chords.
For those exploring Solar Moon’s wider catalogue, the collective maintain an active presence on Bandcamp, offering a deeper dive into their long standing discography.
Slow, dubby and emotionally charged, The Way We Fall proves that Solar Moon’s signature mood and tempo remain timeless.
Set for release on 20 Feb 2026, you can check out all the Solar Moon releases on their Bandcamp here.
