Sydney-based producer Perth Lewis brings ethereal warmth to a drab and wet January with ‘Distance Between’.
There is always a moment when you read NuNorthern Soul in an email where you think, “Wait, I’d better make sure I check this.” Phil Cooper’s ear for sun-drenched, majestic music is as distinguished as you will find in this discrete movement. So it was no surprise that upon listening to Perth Lewis’ ‘Distance Between’, we were left speechless, optimistic, hopeful, serene, and with many other words struggling to capture the feeling.
Perth Lewis is the alias of Sydney-based artist and DJ Luke Fugar, a name perhaps unfamiliar to you as it was to us. With a couple of previous LPs behind him released on Dream Chimney and one self-released album later picked up by NuNorthern Soul, this new long player feels like a pivotal moment for Perth Lewis, opening a door that may mark a momentous step for the young Australian.
Over nine tracks, we are treated to reverb-soaked drum machine hits, whirring synth melodies that verge on otherworldly, and of course the trademark warmth of guitar loops. At times, the album feels perfectly cinematic, yet it also sits comfortably in personal listening sessions or on a sun-soaked terrace.
Poignant moments include ‘A Strange Feeling’, with its haunting chords and delicate acoustic finger work, a short but magical ride that touches the heart. ‘Two Lines Meet’ has a romantic 80s vibe, its off-kilter drum rhythm offset by cathartic guitar riffs, resulting in a track that resonates beautifully. ‘Across The Broadwater’, with its bird samples, ethereal pads, and longing guitar strums, offers a moment of reflection, with the beauty lying in how effortlessly it draws you in.
Overall, ‘Distance Between’ is a beautiful collection of emotive, downtempo instrumentals that take you on a journey you wish would never end.
