A rare extended session brings together Alien Communications, Domenic Cappello and a heavyweight line up for a marathon festive celebration at the legendary Sub Club.

Glasgow is gearing up for one of the standout club nights of the winter as Basement Philosophy lands at Sub Club for an Xtended Xmas Xtravaganza on Saturday 6 December. Running from 7PM to 5AM, the event unites Alien Communications and Domenic Cappello with the venue itself to deliver a ten hour journey through house, techno and electro inside one of the most electrifying basements in global club culture.

Few rooms carry the reputation of Sub Club. Open since 1 April 1987, it has shaped the sound of Scottish nightlife for nearly four decades. Resident Domenic Cappello first stepped into the booth in 1994 after Slam moved on to focus on their night at The Arches. For him, the magic of the space has never changed.

Dominic Cappello

“The space itself is what makes it special. It is small, dark, loud. Just perfect,” he says. With a tight 400 person capacity, the room’s low ceiling and intimate layout generate a pressure cooker atmosphere that DJs across the world speak about with reverence. “The DJ is right there with you, not on a stage, and the whole room moves as one.”

Cappello’s long running residency Subculture grew from that same ethos. “Our vision was that it should be a night where residents could shape the sound over years, not hours.”

For this extended December edition, he teams up again with Simon from Alien Communications, a partnership long built on trust both personally and musically. The pair have been discussing an all night session for years, inspired by the long format club experiences of Berlin and London. Glasgow’s licensing laws usually cap nights at five hours, but this rare extended licence finally opens the door to something deeper.

“We wanted to do something that went over the normal hours you get up here and give people a chance to get that feeling you get in clubs in Europe,” Cappello explains. “The night will evolve musically for the full ten hours.”

That journey begins with deeper house selections from Chez Damier and Babycinno before shifting gears into the sharper edges of electro and techno. Helena Hauff, Fasme Live, Alien Communications, Domenic Cappello and Jos of Eya Records complete a formidable roster that brings together global innovators and homegrown talent.

We had a quick chat with Dominic Cappello, read it in full below.

How long has the Sub Club been going, when did you first start there and what made you start?

The Sub Club opened on 1 April 1987. I’ve been there since April 1994.  I was asked to start after Slam left to concentrate on their night at The Arches .

What makes the Sub Club such a special place?

The Space itself is what makes it special. It’ small, dark, loud. Just perfect. The Sub Club is small by modern club standards at 400 capacity but that intimacy creates a pressure-cooker atmosphere: the DJ is right there with you, not on a stage, and the whole room moves as one. The low ceiling amplifies the sound and makes everything feel closer, heavier, more immersive. Many DJs say they’ve never experienced energy like a full Sub Club dancefloor at peak time.

What was the vision of your night Subculture in the beginning..

Our vision for Subculture was that it should be a night where residents could shape the sound over years, not hours.

Tell us about your night with Alien Communications and what we can expect?

I’ve been playing with Simon for years now and we’ve built-up a trust and friendship both personally and musically. The party will be something we’ve been talking about for a long time now. Unlike places in London and Berlin that can do longer nights, Glasgow has tighter licensing laws. We wanted to do something that went over the normal 5 hours you get up here and give people a chance to get that feeling you get in clubs in Europe . The night will evolve musically for the full 10 hours starting with more deep house with Chez and Babycinno and building up through more electro and techno as the night progresses with Helena Hauff, Fasme Live and ourselves and Jos .

The full line up:

Basement Philosophy promises an immersive celebration of underground electronic music with the unmistakable intensity of Sub Club’s dancefloor. Expect deep rhythms, future focused selections and the kind of communal energy that has defined the venue since 1987.
