A forgotten classic from 1997 from Marius Acke in the way of the ‘Crucial Traxx’ EP gets a digital release on Happiness Therapy.

Back in 1997, amidst a flood of house records that came and went without much fuss, Crucial Traxx 01 by Marius Acke quietly carved out its own niche. Now, nearly three decades later, Happiness Therapy has dusted off this Belgian gem and brought it back into the spotlight with a loving remaster and a striking translucent red vinyl edition. It’s a reissue that feels far more vital than nostalgic.

The music speaks for itself. These tracks are drenched in warmth, grit and groove, the kind of deep, soulful house that sits comfortably in the same crate as Mood II Swing, Glenn Underground or early MAW. Acke’s production is analogue-rich and unfussy, brimming with filtered chords, chunky drum programming and low-slung basslines that make you nod before you even realise you’re dancing.

From the off, the EP captures the energy of that mid-90s sweet spot where house music was still raw but increasingly musical. Each track shows a producer with a deep understanding of the dancefloor and an ear for melody. There’s a touch of New York swagger, Detroit depth and Parisian flair, but it’s filtered through a distinctly Belgian lens: textured, heady and groove-first.

What makes this reissue hit so hard in 2025 is just how current it feels. With modern selectors like Dam Swindle, ANOTR, Chris Stussy and even Disclosure rinsing these tunes, it’s clear that Acke’s sound has aged not only gracefully but prophetically. It fits right into today’s appetite for timeless, soulful club music, making you wonder how it ever flew under the radar the first time.

Beyond its undeniable musicality, Crucial Traxx 01 is a reminder of the global web of house music in the 90s. Acke, already a staple of the Antwerp underground and a contributor to the revered ARS label, brought a unique perspective shaped by US house, hip-hop and local Belgian sensibilities. That blend is evident throughout this EP, and it’s what gives the tracks their staying power.

This isn’t just a historical curiosity. Crucial Traxx 01 is still club-ready, still relevant and still essential. Whether you’re a crate-digging veteran or a fresh-faced DJ looking for authentic heat, this record deserves a spot in your bag. Happiness Therapy’s reissue campaign promises more from Acke’s archive, and if this first chapter is anything to go by, we’re in for a treat.

The EP is out now on Bandcamp here.
