Session Victim return to UK label Delusions Of Grandeur with a superb new electronica EP entitled ‘Sidequests Chapter One’.
Emerging from the heart of Germany’s vibrant underground scene, Session Victim, comprised of Hauke Freer and Matthias Reiling, have carved out a distinctive place in the world of electronic music with their deep, sample-heavy sound. Since forming in the late 2000s, the duo has become synonymous with warm, groove-laden house music that blends dusty hip-hop aesthetics, jazz-inflected textures, and soulful sensibilities. Rooted in a deep passion for vinyl and live performance, Session Victim’s journey from local record collectors to internationally respected producers and DJs reflects a commitment to authenticity and a deep love for the craft that continues to influence the global dance music landscape.
The EP opens with a collaborative number alongside synth wizard Viken Arman. ‘Pulse Of Memory’ is a lively, organic-electronic groove with dazzling synth melodies, dusty organ chords and loads of maddening effect layers. ‘The Unheard’ is a more relaxed groove, delving deep into delicious bass lines with jazzy broken beats and enchanting, airy hooks. Dutch underground house hero Frits Wentink delivers his fiery remix of ‘Pulse Of Memory’ next. Kinetically charged drums, stabby synths takes us on a reminiscent journey of 90’s House trips. Frits is one of our favourite producers and DJ’s at the moment so for us, first class!
‘Defy Gravity’ is a wonderful downtempo piece that captures that terrace-sunset vibe perfectly! String bass is first class. ‘Sometimes’ rounds off the EP with a moody, balearic type of track, great production on this one, perfect for those who love those oddities someone like José Padilla would drop at Café del Mar.
This release marks the first part of a Trilogy with subsequent EP’s featuring further explorations in creative rhythm and the nostalgic echoes of adventure, not to mention some banging remixes from Ian Pooley and Jimpster.
