Matador’s RUKUS crew expands this November when LA-based producer SHADED joins the ranks bringing with him his ‘Below Low’ EP backed by remixes from Hector and Russell.
Raised in California, Skyler Taugher aka SHADED honed his skills as part of duo SHDWPLAY before breaking out on his own, yearning for that creative freedom many seek. As an already active family member of Dubfire’s SCI+TEC imprint as SHDWPLAY, SHADED has continued to grow with he labels help releasing multiple EP’s back in 2012 and 2013 and has since gone on to release on Canadian label Twin Turbo as well as dropping remixes for the likes of Carlo Lio, Tiga, Dubfire and Oliver Huntemann.
Opening with the original mix of ‘Below Low‘ which is a refrained minimal groove at first, teasing with bubbling bass lines and evolving lead synths that balance off against perfectly accentuated drum lines. There’s some really nice builds that will cause a frenzy but overall this is a workhorse of a groove that will emancipate dance floors.
‘This Function‘ is next. A futuristic, arpeggiated sound that has a crazed, tense vibe throughout coupled with retrospective acid nuances. Female vox snippets litter the sound coupled with breathy mechanical fx and rattling top percussion. Relentless energy from this one.
The first remix comes from Vato Locos boss Hector who takes ‘Below Low‘ on a deeper journey fuelled by bubbling sub patterns and sharp, metallic clangs of percussion.
Dublin newcomer Russell closes the EP with a show-stealing remix of ‘This Function‘. Heading into cinematic territory, this beautifully orchestrated sound is driven by sharp, rhythmic melodies, angry modulated bass lines and nicely balanced drum sequences that don’t overpower. Progressive and magical this is one hell of an arrival for Russell, bravo sir.
